DSEX Under Pressure: Why 6,000 Failed - and What the Next Move Depends On

The Dhaka market entered the final week of August with a weaker technical structure than it had only days earlier. The 20 August rebound failed to establish follow-through, and the 23 August session pushed DSEX back to 5,722.21 as breadth deteriorated sharply. The correction is best understood as a multi-factor repricing: failed technical confirmation near 6,000, margin-rule transition, month-end positioning risk, domestic energy constraints and higher global oil prices - partially offset by softer Treasury-bill yields.

Key market readout

DSEX closed at 5,722.21 on 23 August, down 63.87 points or 1.10%. DSE end-of-day turnover was approximately Tk711.15 crore. Breadth was heavily negative at 32 advances, 322 declines and 41 unchanged issues. The analytical support reference is 5,674, while 6,000 remains the major psychological resistance level.
