At a glance

Bangladesh’s equity market remained under pressure on 6 October, with the DSEX falling 0.37% to 5,424.91 and recording its fourth consecutive lower close. While headline DSE turnover rose to Tk 5.64 billion, the improvement was largely driven by a sharp increase in block trades rather than stronger activity in the regular market. Foreign investors emerged as the largest net sellers, while retail and institutional investors provided some support. Market breadth remained weak, and mutual funds came under particularly heavy pressure, with none of the 31 traded funds advancing. The CSE followed a similar pattern, leaving both exchanges close to their September lows and keeping the market’s near-term focus firmly on whether those support levels can hold.

1.3 Cross-Market Conclusion

Direction. DSEX fell 20.37 points (–0.37%) to 5,424.91 after an early high of 5,480.06. The intraday low was 5,421.69, so the index closed slightly above its low for the first time in four sessions. It has declined on four consecutive sessions and stands 0.85% above the 14 September low of 5,379 (press). DS30 (–0.22%) again held up better than DSES (–0.46%) and DSMEX (–1.85%). On the CSE, CSCX fell 0.37% to 8,938.84 (0.34% above its 14 September low) and CASPI 0.43% to 14,557.65, only 3.80 points above its 14 September close. Both exchanges are now testing their September lows. The DSE sentiment gauge read 20 ("Extreme Bear"), from 15.

Liquidity and intensity. Headline DSE turnover rose +5.04%, but the increase was entirely block-driven: block turnover rose 304.64% to Tk 636.67 mn (11.29% of total, a period high), while normal-board turnover fell 4.14% to Tk 4,997.29 mn, the lowest in the period. Volume (–0.08%) and transactions (–0.33%) were flat. CSE turnover was little changed (–2.84%), but 74.79% of it came from block trades, led by a Tk 81.53 mn PTL block.

Breadth and participation. DSE breadth was 79 advances / 270 declines (A/D 0.29), or 3.42 decliners per advancer. That is better than 5 October (5.26) but the fourth consecutive session above the 2.5 warning level (Section 25). Investor flow rotated again. Retail turned net buyer (+1.76% of total), and foreign investors were the largest net sellers (–2.45%, est. –Tk 138.22 mn) on their highest participation in the period (4.42% of activity). Institutions (+0.41%) were net buyers for a third session.

Relative activity and concentration. The DSE accounted for 97.13% of combined turnover. Textile led again (29.79% of DSE main-board turnover), and SAIHAMTEX and PTL were the largest counters on both boards. Mutual funds were the clearest weak spot. Overall, the session extended the decline toward the September lows on thin open-market liquidity, heavy block activity and foreign selling. Breadth was slightly less extreme, but there is no evidence yet of a low.
