1. Executive Market Summary
The DSEX gave back part of Wednesday's rebound on Thursday, 29 October 2026, losing 15.83 points (-0.29%) to 5,417.44. All four DSE indices fell: DS30 -0.45%, DSES -0.36% and CDSET -0.32%. The index opened strongly and reached 5,453.26 in the first minutes, above the 28 Oct 20-day SMA (5,450.16) and 1.52 points short of the 5,454.78 recovery trigger, then faded through the session to a low of 5,407.39 before closing at 5,417.44. It held above the 12 Oct close (5,404.87) and the 28 Oct low (5,396.29), but closed below the 5-SMA set on 28 Oct (5,420.50).
Headline turnover rose 28.05% to Tk 5,646.21 mn, but Tk 998.50 mn of it was a single block transaction in UCB (98.86 mn shares at Tk 10.10 in four trades). Excluding that block, turnover was Tk 4,647.72 mn (+5.40%), and regular-board value rose 7.19% to Tk 4,516.14 mn. Breadth turned negative at 147 advances, 185 declines and 53 unchanged (A/D 0.79x, from 3.68x). Mutual funds were the exception, rising 14 to 3.
On the CSE, CSCX rose +0.50% to 8,969.40 and CASPI +0.40% to 14,588.10; all five CSE indices were higher, the first divergence from the DSE in seven sessions. CSE turnover was Tk 179.41 mn, 57.1% of its block trades, led by CITYGENINS (Tk 86.69 mn in 11 blocks at Tk 120.10–125.00).
KEY OBSERVATION | The 28 Oct rebound did not follow through. Price slipped back into the 5,404.87–5,433.27 range, and breadth fell back below 1.00x, though not to the sub-0.50x readings of 25–27 Oct. The large banks that hosted Q3 board meetings on 28 Oct fell (PRIMEBANK −1.67%, BRACBANK −1.03%, MARICO −0.28%), while PUBALIBANK (+5.93%) and mutual funds (volume-weighted +5.63%) attracted buying. Momentum is mixed: DSEX RSI eased to 41.71, but the MACD histogram widened again to +3.82. The terminal sentiment gauge fell to 37 'Bear' from 67 'Bull'.
SCENARIO CASTING | The 29 Oct close turns the DSEX from a recovery-confirmation watch back to a range watch. The failed-rebound condition set on 28 Oct was met, but the downside re-test was not. The next session (Sunday, 1 November) needs to show whether 5,404.87 holds. All levels come from today's report.
- Extended recovery: not met: The DSEX did not close above 5,454.78; the intraday high (5,453.26) came within 1.52 points, and A/D was 0.79x (needed above 1.50x).
- Consolidation (base case): partly met: The DSEX held inside 5,404.87–5,454.78, but A/D was below the 1.00x condition.
- Failed rebound: met: The close (5,417.44) was below 5,420.50 and 5,421.51, so 28 Oct stands as a one-day bounce for now.
- Downside re-test: not triggered: The low (5,407.39) held above 5,396.29.
Table 1A: Scenarios for the next session
Scenario | Trigger | What it means |
|---|---|---|
Recovery resumes | DSEX closes above 5,425.71 (10-SMA) and 5,433.27 (28 Oct close), with A/D above 1.00x | Range repair back on track; 5,450.16 (20-SMA) and 5,453.26 are next |
Consolidation (base case) | DSEX holds 5,404.87–5,433.27, A/D 0.80–1.20x, regular-board turnover Tk 3,800–4,600 mn | Sideways base above the 12 Oct close |
Downside re-test | Close below 5,407.39 (today's low) and 5,404.87 | 5,396.29 (28 Oct low) and 5,379.00 (14 Sep low) come back into play |
Breakdown | Close below 5,379.00 with A/D below 0.50x | The October base fails |
Momentum markers | RSI is 41.71. Above 45 counts as stabilising, above 50 as momentum turning positive, and below 35 as weakening. The MACD histogram (+3.82) is still widening; a turn below zero would confirm a bearish crossover.
